Cire Kane of Senegal is initiative Synapse, with support from New Stories. Synapse's mission is to advance the understanding, practice and development of creative and entrepreneurial leadership and social change for the benefit of Senegalese and African society. To do so, Synapse must increase youth achievement and prepare young people to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The future quality of Senegalese life is at stake. But there are many obstacles. Youth represents more than 52% of Senegalese population. Seven in 10 Senegalese children and young people grow up near or below the poverty level. The most chanceful of them are pioneering new initiatives. These young entrepreneurs have fewer resources for business or social start-up. Their access to opportunities is very limited. They have fewer social networks that can assist them in the start-up. Senegal cannot afford diminished commitment to its most important and vital human resources. We must tear down the dividing walls that constrain innovation in our society and that isolate youth organizations from other services. We must re-engage young leaders from every part of society and equip them with the tools and knowledge to revitalize our covenant with the next generation. The longer we wait, the more children and youth are at risk, and the greater the challenge becomes. We argue that the best response to these challenges is to develop our capacity for creative entrepreneurial leadership by addressing diverse issues including founding new learning communities, investing more effectively in youth, embedding its choice, broadening its involvement and diversifying its opportunities. |
